Learn About the Staple American Food, the Mac and Cheese Accentuated with Gruyere

The proverbial comfort food macaroni and cheese, best known as mac and cheese to the rest of the world, has been reinvented at least a hundred times – the addition of Le Gruyere makes it perfect. It has been a staple in most American homes just like burgers and hotdogs. A lot of versions can be found on this dish, some with different kinds of cheese as sauce like the Swiss cheese Gruyere Cheese. 

 How Mac and Cheese Reached America

 As early as the 14th Century, a cheese and pasta casserole called Makerouns was recorded in an English cookbook. Around the 18th Century, this dish has been quite popular in all of Europe and was served to the upperclass. When the Englishmen colonized North America, they also brought this delectable dish with them and as they say, the rest is history. Americans learned to love the dish their colonizers brought which reached thousands of households especially when Kraft introduced it in a package and called it Kraft Dinner. The demand for Kraft Dinner increased during World War II when a shortage of milk and dairy was felt. Kraft’s mac and cheese became such a hit and was the solution for most of the hungry stomachs during that time.

Mac and Cheese Versions

The basic mac and cheese consists of cooked macaroni and a white cheesy sauce. However, as times have changed and taste buds greatly differ, variations of mac and cheese have been introduced to suit different needs and tastes. To name a few, we have baked mac, very saucy mac and cheese, macaroni cheese pizza, homemade mac and cheese and four cheeser macaroni. I’m pretty sure each family has a unique variation to this cheesy treat by adding certain ingredients that most, if not all, family members love. To add to that, in a normal American home, a box of instant mac and cheese mix is very common and readily available.

Mac and Cheese Ingredients

As previously mentioned, this dish had too many variations and each has a unique ingredient or cooking style. However, what must be present as your main ingredients are your macaroni pasta and cheese, that you would use for the sauce. Choosing your pasta will depend on your preference as you can always choose to buy the freshly-made ones or the packed. Choosing your cheese will depend on if you prefer a strong taste or subtle flavour. You may also combine different cheese variants such as Gruyere cheese with others. Now that you’ve learned quite a lot about mac and cheese, start now by buying your pasta in your local grocery and your cheese at any  gourmet cheese shop in your town!
